Nanimo - The Falcon Rock in Departure Bay

In 1966 I spent a summer working on the Ministry of Fisheries patrol vessel, the Greyfish II out of Kitimat, BC. While patrolling the waters between Butedale and Klemtu, our ship-to-shore radio crackled with the names of other vessels, invariably bigger and more important than ours. The Babine Post. The Ripple Rock. And, among a score of others, the Falcon Rock. I was hit by a wave of nostalgia when I spied the Falcon Rock riding at anchor, just off the Departure Bay beach in Nanaimo.

The 50 foot Falcon Rock was built for the Minister of Fisheries in 1960 at the McKay-Cormack Ltd yard in Victoria. She served the Department for 37 years, much or all of it out of Prince Rupert.
